Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

For in-studio sessions, the Client Closet has lots of great options for babies, children, and mothers.

For sessions on location, my  Spring Summer Style Guide  and my Fall Winter Style Guide provide lots of ideas and guidance on this!

(and mamas, a maxi dress ALWAYS flatters in photos!)

What time of day should my session happen?

The most beautiful, flattering light happens around sunrise and sunset.  I recommend booking sessions as close to those times as possible.

Don't worry though if an early morning or late evening session won't work for your family.  We can get amazing photos anytime of day!

Where should we take photos?

I have a long list of gorgeous locations in the area.  Once your session is booked, we'll touch base about what kind of a "feel" you're looking for, and I'll provide a link to my locations gallery!  If you have a special spot in mind, I'm always open to learning new locations.

What should I bring?

Leave as much as you can in the car, so you have it nearby if you need it.  I will try to carry any bags you need to bring, so that when we take spontaneous photos of you interacting with your family, the purse/phone/diaper bag is not in the shot! For sessions with little ones, it's a great idea to pack the car with water, a snack that's not too messy (think cheerios) and a change of clothes, just in case ;)

Can I bring my pet?

Absolutely!  We'll work together to choose a location that welcomes four-legged family members.  If we are doing family photos and you'd like your dog to be in some of them, please bring a helper.   Enlist a friend (who won't be in the pictures) who is good with your pup and can take him off for potty breaks and keep him occupied for the photos that he won't be in.  It makes the experience a lot more fun for everybody, especially your fur-baby!

My child is shy.  Should I be worried?

Not at all!  In sessions with little ones, let's be honest--the toddler is running the show.  When I first meet your family, I'll probably greet your kids before I say hello to you-- I'll drop down,  introduce myself, make some conversation with them, and ask if it's alright if I take their picture.  Most kids I've worked with respond really well to this and love that I'm excited to meet THEM-- I'm not just another adult who's there to talk to their parents.  (so don't be offended-- I'm really excited to meet you, too-- this just sets an excellent rapport between me and the kids for the rest of the day!)

My kid is so cute! Can I take my own photos during the session?

Please, no iPhone photos during your portrait session.  Your standard photo release includes an agreement that I'll be the sole photographer during your session- that includes mom snapping shots of the kiddos with her phone!  There are lots of reasons for this, including- the kids need to be looking at MY camera, not your phone!   Please wait for the "real thing" from me! :)

Do you offer accommodations for my child with special needs?

Yes!  My background is in special education, and I care about kids and their families.  I know that sometimes things don’t go as planned and kids can be unpredictable. If your child has a diagnosed disability, I offer unlimited session time.  Just book the session that’s the right size for the number of people in your group, and I’ll block off extra time in my calendar, just in case.  You can relax, since I'll spend as much time as your child needs to get comfortable with the camera and for us to get you some wonderful photos.  I have years of experience working with kids of all ages and abilities, and I'd love to meet yours.  Please reach out if you want to chat- I want you to feel relaxed and understood.
